I have a feeling “Adventure Unlimited” may be a long series
of episodes/blogs. Yesterday I was asked
to travel to a site that has a church and a clinic but, we were delayed in leaving
until 4:30pm. Kufa was taking me to Dama
Christian Clinic to photograph progress on new buildings and upgrades. Our
journey led us through Hippo Valley sugar cane fields and then across the Makambe
River. When we arrived at the river I
learned it was a wet crossing (drive through water as it flows over the
bridge). I guess the water was higher
than normal (and it looked it). But
adventure unlimited sends us across through a group of cows. After crossing Kufa says we will be taking
the other road home even though it is twice as long. The next hour of driving was over a network
of small dirt roads and I wasn’t sure how Kufa could even know the way. Later I learned this is the area he grew up
in so he was quite familiar. We arrived
at the clinic after hours and I took quickly to photographing the site inside
and out. While inside a rain began to
fall (very welcome) lightly then heavily.
I finished the inside during the downpour and then was able to take
pictures of the church and the extended stay area for expectant moms. We left there to go to Kufa’s family compound
arriving at sunset (which was beautiful but difficult to photograph so I just
enjoyed it). Adventure Unlimited
continued on our drive home. I didn’t mention
earlier that the window in our truck had broken out during a previous
altercation with another vehicle appendage.
So, during the rain Kufa had fitted a piece of plastic to keep the
inside damp instead of soaked. Our drive
home had us watching the sky for more rain.
We arrived home around 9pm with the girls getting in bed. It may not sound like adventure unlimited,
but as we drove through the night on small roads it seemed like an adventure to
me.
