This past week we were on holiday, as they say in these
parts. Doesn’t “holiday” sound so much
more fun than “vacation”? We went to Victoria Falls, one of the seven natural
wonders of the world. It is one of those
places Paul could have been writing about in Romans 1, “For since the creation
of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature,
have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that
they are without excuse.” So many
attributes of God are reflected there, His power as the water falls in
thunderous sheets over the cliffs, His spectacular creativity in their beauty,
His unearned love pouring down on us like the rain formed by the mist. We had a wonderful day walking the Falls,
getting soaked, and picnicking. Later that afternoon we took a sunset cruise on
the Zambezi River. It was so relaxing
(and dry). We spied crocodiles, hippos,
and fowl (of which I can’t remember their names). Elephant sightings are also common but they
eluded us that day. However, as we were
racing to a spot where other boats had spied them, the moon was rising and it
was magnificent. I was happy to trade an
elephant for a moonrise.
Victoria Falls is about nine hours from Chiredzi so we
stopped halfway at Leanna’s house in Bulawayo.
Remember our angel from our first week’s arrival in Chiredzi? There she was again, her and her husband
completely pampering us during our stay. One night we stayed in the Nesbitt
Castle, a 100-year-old castle that has been beautifully renovated into a
hotel. I have to admit I’ve never
considered Zimbabwe a holiday destination but after this past week, I can
highly recommend it.
